## Short answer

If your Facebook account is disabled and you used "Log in with Facebook" for Instagram, try logging in to Instagram with your username, email or phone number and reset the password by email or SMS. Your Instagram account is usually separate. Once in, set a password, update contact details and remove the disabled Facebook from Accounts Center if needed.

## Summary

- Instagram is usually separate from a disabled Facebook.
- Use password reset with your email or phone.
- Set an Instagram password.
- Update contact details.
- Instagram can also be affected if both broke rules.

Here's how to get back into Instagram when the Facebook login stops working.

## How do I get in?

1. Open Instagram and tap Forgot password.
2. Enter your username, email or phone.
3. Use the link or code to set a password.
4. Log in with the new password.

Log in with Facebook is only a shortcut. Your Instagram profile is still its own account with its own username, and Instagram can usually send a login link or code to the email address or phone number saved on that profile. Instagram's guide for hacked or locked accounts explains the same route: on the login screen tap Forgot password, enter your username, email or phone number, complete the captcha, then use the link sent by email or SMS.

If you have never set an Instagram password because you always used Facebook, the reset still works. The link lets you create a password for the Instagram account for the first time. After that you can log in with your username and password even while Facebook stays disabled.

## Why did Facebook being disabled lock me out of Instagram?

When accounts share Accounts Center, Facebook can act as the login method for Instagram. If Facebook disables that account, the shortcut fails, so Instagram cannot confirm it is you through Facebook. That is different from Instagram itself being disabled. Facebook's page My personal Facebook account is suspended or disabled explains that a disabled Facebook account can no longer be used to log in, and that you may have a set time to disagree with the decision.

Sometimes the same decision affects both accounts. If Meta believes the same person broke its rules on both apps, or the accounts are closely linked through the same Meta Account, you may see a disabled notice on Instagram too. In that case, read the Instagram notice separately: Instagram's About disabled Instagram accounts page explains that you may be able to request a review from the notice when you try to log in.

## What if no email or phone is linked?

| Situation | Option |
| --- | --- |
| Device still logged in | Add email and password now |
| No contact details | Try instagram.com/hacked support options |
| If both accounts are disabled, follow the on-screen instructions shown on each one. | Appeal each separately |

If you are still logged in to Instagram on any phone, tablet or browser, use that session now. Go to Accounts Center, Personal details, and add an email address and phone number only you control, then set a password. Do not log out of that device until you have tested the new password on another device.

If you are logged out everywhere and Instagram has no email or phone for you, use the support request on the login help screen. If your profile has photos of you, Instagram may ask for a video selfie turning your head in different directions. Instagram says the video is never visible on the account and is deleted within 30 days. If the account has no photos of you, Instagram may ask for the email or phone you signed up with and the type of device you used at sign-up.

## What common mistakes should I avoid?

- Waiting for Facebook to be restored first.
- Creating a new Instagram account.
- Leaving no email or phone on Instagram.
- Using the same password on both.

Do not create a new Instagram account while you are trying to recover the old one, and do not use a second Facebook profile to log in. Meta's Account Integrity policy treats accounts created to get around enforcement as a violation, and that can drag your remaining accounts into the problem. Fix access to the original account first.

## How do I stop this happening again?

- Give every Meta account its own email address and phone number, not just a Facebook login.
- Turn on two-factor authentication with an authenticator app on Instagram and on Facebook.
- Save the backup codes Instagram gives you somewhere offline.
- Check Account Status on both apps every few months, so you see warnings before a disable.

## How do I keep the account safe while I sort this out?

- Never share a login code, password or backup code with anyone, including people who say they work for Meta, the police or a recovery service.
- Make sure the email address and phone number on the account are ones you still control, and remove any you do not recognise.
- Turn on two-factor authentication where the platform offers it, ideally with an authenticator app, and keep your backup codes somewhere offline.
- Log in only from the official app or by typing the address yourself, not from links in messages, comments or ads.
- Keep screenshots of every notice, email and step you take, with dates, in case you need them for a review or a report.
- Make one careful attempt at each official step rather than many rushed ones, because repeated failed attempts can trigger extra checks.

## When It Is Safer to Get Expert Help

Ask for help before you appeal if the account matters to your income, your business or your memories, if you have already had one appeal rejected, or if you cannot tell whether the problem is a bug, a restriction or a hack. That is where most avoidable losses happen.

- Instagram also shows a disabled notice, not just a login failure.
- The Instagram account has no email or phone and no device still logged in.
- You have a short deadline to disagree with the Facebook decision and are unsure what to write.
- You are not sure whether the Facebook account was disabled after a hack.

### Will Instagram be disabled too?

Not usually. Instagram is a separate account, and a Facebook disable does not automatically disable it. It can happen if Meta links both accounts to the same violation, so check for a notice on Instagram itself.

### Should I unlink Facebook?

Only after you can log in to Instagram with a password and your own email or phone. Then remove the disabled Facebook profile from Accounts Center so it is no longer your only login method.

### Can I appeal Facebook separately?

Yes. Facebook and Instagram decisions are reviewed separately. Use the disagree or request review option on the Facebook notice within the time it shows, and handle Instagram access on its own.

### Can you help?

Yes. AwareXone offers a free case review. We look at both accounts and tell you the safest order to recover them.

### Can AwareXone check my case before I appeal?

Yes. AwareXone offers a free case review. Send us what you see on screen and what you have already tried, and an expert will tell you whether to appeal, wait or take another route. We never ask for your password or codes.
