## Short answer

At the Discord authenticator prompt, choose Verify with something else and use an unused backup code, or a code sent to your phone if you added SMS. Look for a saved discord_backup_codes.txt file or a screenshot. If you are still logged in on another device, view your backup codes in User Settings. Discord says Support cannot remove MFA without them.

## Summary

- Discord says that without backup codes it cannot remove MFA or issue new backup codes.
- Look for a file called discord_backup_codes.txt or a screenshot of your codes.
- At the code prompt, choose Verify with something else, then Use a backup code.
- If you set up SMS as a backup, you can choose Use a code sent to your phone.
- If you are still logged in somewhere, you can view backup codes in User Settings.

Multi-factor authentication, which Discord calls MFA, protects your account by asking for a code from an authenticator app when you log in. If you lose the phone that had the app, or delete the app, you can be locked out. Discord is very clear about what it can and cannot do here, and backup codes are central. This guide sets out every route Discord describes, in the order to try them.

> Warning: **Discord's key rule.** Discord says that if you do not have access to your backup codes, it is unable to remove MFA or issue new backup codes for you.

## Which route can I use?

| What you have | Route |
| --- | --- |
| A saved list of backup codes | Log in with an unused backup code |
| SMS set up as a backup on the account | Log in with a code sent to your phone |
| Discord still logged in on another device | View backup codes in User Settings, then remove and re-add MFA |
| A cloud backup of your authenticator app | Restore the app using the app maker's own guide |
| None of these | Discord says Support cannot remove MFA |

## Where might my backup codes be?

Discord says to check whether you saved your backup codes anywhere. It mentions a text file called discord_backup_codes.txt, or a screenshot of the codes in your photo gallery ([Discord Support](https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/115001221072-Lost-Two-Factor-Codes)).

- Your downloads folder, or a cloud drive, for discord_backup_codes.txt
- Your phone's photo gallery or screenshots folder
- A password manager's secure notes
- Printed or handwritten notes from when you set up MFA

## How do I log in with a backup code?

Discord gives these steps ([Discord Support](https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/115001221072-Lost-Two-Factor-Codes)):

1. Log in with your email and password until you see the prompt for an authenticator code.
2. Press Verify with something else.
3. Select Use a backup code.
4. Enter the 8-digit code and press Confirm.

Discord says that if the option to use a backup code is not available, all of your backup codes have been used, and its support team cannot generate new ones for you.

## How do I use an SMS code instead?

If you set up SMS on your account, Discord says you can receive a code by text instead ([Discord Support](https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/115001221072-Lost-Two-Factor-Codes)):

1. At the authenticator prompt, press Verify with something else.
2. Select Use a code sent to your phone.
3. Enter the SMS code and press Confirm.

## What if I am still logged in somewhere?

If Discord is still open on a computer, browser or another phone, you can get your backup codes from there ([Discord Support](https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/115001221072-Lost-Two-Factor-Codes)):

1. Open User Settings with the cogwheel button at the bottom left.
2. Under My Account, press View Backup Codes and enter your password.
3. Copy the codes somewhere safe.
4. Press Remove Authenticator App, choose Verify with something else and enter a backup code to confirm.
5. Set MFA up again on your new device.

## What should I do once I am back in?

Discord suggests removing the authenticator app from your account so you can add it back later. In User Settings, under My Account, press Remove Authenticator App and confirm. Then set MFA up again with your new phone, and save the new backup codes somewhere you will be able to find them.

Discord's own security advice also includes using a strong, unique password and being cautious of unknown links and files ([Discord Support](https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/24160905919511-My-Discord-Account-was-Hacked-or-Compromised)).

## What if I used Google Authenticator?

Discord points people who set up MFA with Google Authenticator to Google's own guide for that app. If your authenticator app had a cloud backup or account sync, restoring it on a new phone may bring your Discord codes back, so check that before giving up.

## How do I avoid this next time?

- Save your backup codes in at least two safe places, such as a password manager and a printed copy.
- Add SMS as a backup method if it is available to you.
- Before changing phones, move or back up your authenticator app.
- Keep Discord logged in on a second trusted device.

## Which MFA methods does Discord support?

Discord says it supports three types of MFA: security keys or passkeys, an authenticator app, and SMS. It recommends setting up a security key or passkey, and says you always get backup codes in case you lose access to your MFA device ([Discord Support](https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/219576828-Setting-up-Multi-Factor-Authentication)).

Discord is candid about SMS. It says SMS MFA is better than no MFA, but not by much, because attackers can intercept texts or take over phone numbers through SIM swaps. It also says SMS can only be enabled after you have set up an authenticator app. Discord warns that not all authenticator apps sync across devices or to the cloud, so losing your phone without backup codes may mean losing access.

Discord recommends storing backup codes in a password manager, or printing them and keeping them hidden. Each code works once, so after you regain control and set up MFA again, generate a fresh set and store it safely.

## Common mistakes

- Assuming Discord Support can switch MFA off, which Discord says it cannot do without backup codes.
- Using all your backup codes without generating new ones.
- Resetting or wiping an old phone before moving the authenticator app.
- Sending your login details to anyone who offers to bypass MFA.

## Watch out for scams

Discord says its staff will never contact users directly through the Discord app for support matters, and warns against anyone who asks for personal information, payment or login details. Offers to remove MFA for you are not part of Discord's process. Our guide on [Discord scams and hacked accounts](https://www.awarexone.com/research/discord-account-hacked-nitro-scam) explains common tricks.

## What are the realistic limits?

Discord controls account access and says it cannot remove MFA or issue new backup codes without them. If none of the routes above work, recovery may not be possible. If your account was disabled rather than locked by MFA, see [Discord account disabled](https://www.awarexone.com/research/discord-account-disabled).
